About Guangxi

Guangxi, with full name Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is situated in China's southern frontier area, facing Beibuwan Gulf in the south (The total length of the coast line is about 1,500 kilometres.) and bordering Viet Nam on the southwest. During the Northern Song Dynasty (960 A.D-1127 A.D), this region was under the administration of Guangnanxi Lu (lu, ancient name for province), which was later abbreviated as Guangxi Lu, hence the name Guangxi. In the Qin Dunasty(221 B.C-207 B.C), the region was under the administration of Guilin Jun and Xiang Jun (jun, ancient name for prefecture), and became known as Gui subsequently.

The whole region covers an area of over 236,700 square kilometres with a population of 49.25 million, comprising nationalities of Zhuang, Han, Yao, Miao, Dong, Mulan, Maonan, Hui, Jing, Yi, Sui and Gelao.

Education

With the economic development and social progress of Guangxi, its education also is on a new level. In 2002, the gross enrollment rate of higher education is 15 percent, marking Guangxi step into the popular stage for higher education. In 2007, the "two bases" has passed the inspection of the state, marking its 9-year compulsory education universal and young illiteracies have wiped out. In 2009, Guangxi has 5053 nursery schools , with 112.82 million kindergartens and 2.91 million full-time teachers; There are elementary schools of 14,290, with in school students 436.78 million, and 22.08 million full-time teachers;Junior High-schools are 2019, with 206.55 million students, 11.82 million full-time teachers; and 478 Senior high schools, with students 75.28 million, 4.15 million full-time teachers; 392 secondary vocational schools, students 62.89 million, 2.08 million full-time teachers; Post secondary schools are 75, including 29 universities (where 9 are independent colleges), 8 colleges, 31 vocational schools, 7 continuing education institutes. Total postsecondary students 691,500, including 1.88 million master graduate students, 52.83 million undergraduate students, and 3.10 million full-time teachers.

Guangxi Arts Institute

Guangxi Arts Institute (GXAI) is located in Nanning, the capital city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The history of GXAI can well be traced back to the Guangxi Arts Faculty Training School founded by Xu Beihong, the great painter in 1938.

Guangxi Medical University

Located in the city of Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangxi Medical University (GMU), founded in November 21, 1934, is one of the 22 oldest medical institutes in China. GMU now is composed of 23 schools, 1 P. E. department, 11 affiliated Third-grade Class-A Hospitals, 71 teaching and interning bases. GMU has 4 centers for post-doctoral studies, 1 doctoral program in clinical medicine, 9 doctoral programs in other disciplines, 4 first-level master programs, 39 second-level master programs and 12 undergraduate programs. There are more than 11,000 full-time students. GMU has established exchange and cooperation links with universities, research institutes, and hospitals over 50 countries including USA, Britain, Denmark, Japan, Australia etc. Outstanding staff and teachers are sent abroad to give lectures, attend international conferences, as well as take advance studies every year.

Scholarship

Guangxi Government Scholarship for ASEAN Students was established by the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in 2010 for the purpose to fund the students and research scholars from ASEAN Countries who intend to study or make scientific research in the institutions of higher learning of Guangxi, and to increase and develop international exchanges and cooperation between Guangxi and ASEAN countries in education.

Scholarship Categories and Requirements for Applicants

The scholarship is devided into two categories: full scholarship and outstanding student award.
(1) Full scholarship
The full scholarship is designed for the students from ASEAN countries who are to study in the universities of Guangxi for bachelor's, master's or Phd degree. Recipients of the scholarship will enjoy exemption of such fees as for registration, tuition, textbooks and other teaching materials, accommodation, and insurance for diseases and accidents. In addition, they will also get living expense by month.
(2) Outstanding student award
The outstanding student award is given to the self-funded students from ASEAN countries who will receive their education in the universities of Guangxi for one year or longer, and is excellent both in moral character and study.

Can I work while studying?

According to government regulations in China, international students cannot work during their studies. However, part-time work or internships are sometimes allowed. Jobs teaching English are particularly easy for native English speakers to find.
